Georgia and NATO: Turning point or Point of No Return?

Abstract:

Is Georgia’s integration into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) security structures leading to assured full membership? Ever since gaining independence in 1990, Georgia has tried to free itself from Russian influence, focusing on becoming a member of NATO. However, the Georgian journey to NATO is complicated by the country’s internal political situation and external relations with Russia. Georgian internal conflicts with breakaway territories supported by Russia led to the Russian invasion into Georgian territory in 2008. Russia suppresses Georgian efforts to join NATO, considers the South Caucasus to be a strategic sphere of interest, and intends to exercise its influence there. Nevertheless, the current Georgian government continues to pursue NATO membership. Key determinants for any invitation to new members are whether their admission to NATO will strengthen the alliance, further the basic objective of NATO enlargement, and increase security and stability across Europe.

Col. GS Martin Botík, MSS born in 1968, graduated military pedagogical college in Bratislava (1990) and War college in Carlise (1915). During his praxis he served in various commanding and staff positions in Army of the Czech republic at all commanding levels, including 8 deployments abroad. Nowadays, he is member of Centre for Security and Military Strategic Studies, University of Defence. His research is focused on opetrational planning and military operations abroad.

    Str. 78 Gruzie a NATO: Bod obratu nebo bod zlomu

    Obsáhlý článek v anglickém jazyce, velmi dobře zpracovaný, rozebírá na 14 stránkách situaci v Gruzii. Hlavní zaměření je na snahy Gruzie o vstup do NATO. Pozornost je věnována historii, zejména ale vnitropolitickému vývoji od roku 1990. Mezi nedostatečně řešené patří rovněž etnické problémy..
    Podrobně jsou charakterizovány zájmy Ruska v \Kavkazském regionu a konkrétní činnost pro udržení svého postavení.
    NATO má stanoveny přísné požadavky na přijetí nových členů. Proti přijetí Gruzie do NATO se postavily některé členské státy, např. Německo .Rovněž tato část je v článku uvedena. Celkově lze hodnotit jako přínos pro přehled o současné situaci. článek.
