Destruction of Syrian Chemical Weapons: The Next Step to the Global Chemical DisarmamentReviewed - OtherIng. Ladislav Středa, CSc.Vojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2014, Vol. XXIII. (LV.): 88-101 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.23.2014.04.088-101 This paper is above all a quick piece of information on current problem which could have provoked a large war in the Middle East. And also about a unique operation to resolve it. Syrian chemical weapons used to be a serious threat to the entire Middle East, mainly in the context of the ongoing civil war. This was confirmed by repeated use of nerve agent sarin during the conflict. The destruction of Syrian chemical weapons eliminated the threat of escalation of the conflict and its extension to other countries. |

The UN and NATO as the Main Pillars of the International Security Architecture with a Focus on the Middle East RegionReviewed - ResearchYvona Novotná-ŠabackáVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 2/2024, Vol. XXXIII. (LXV.): 18-35 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.33.2024.02.018-035 This study provides a summary overview of the creation and the activities of the international security architecture in the form of their two main pillars, i.e. the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Near and Middle East region. Within the framework of international security relations, this is a very unstable and conflictual region, where this instability has lasted practically since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. The global UN, its overall activity and importance, especially humanitarian and peace-building activities not only for the Near and Middle East region, is very beneficial, through out the Cold War period up to the present day. As a security organization, NATO is among the most important global actors influencing current international security relations. Through their activities, both of these organizations represent a essential means of ensuring world peace and security. |
The Effort to Destroy Chemical Weapons ContinuesReviewed - ReviewIng. Ladislav Středa, CSc., JUDr. Pavel Caban, Ph.D.Vojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 1/2013, Vol. XXII. (LIV.): 131-140 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.22.2013.01.130-140 The final extended deadline, established by the Chemical Weapons Convention for the destruction of chemical weapons, passed in 2012. Despite all efforts and enormous amount of funds, the goal to destroy all chemical weapons within this date has not been achieved. The authors enumerate states that this fulfilled this resolution and others that this task did not accomplished, for some reasons. According to the destruction plans, the Russian Federation should complete the destruction by the end of 2015, Libya by the end of 2016, and the United States not until September 2023. |

Laser Weapons as a New Entity to Small FirearmsReviewed - ReviewLadislav KulhánekVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 3/2023, Vol. XXXII. (LXIV.): 48-62 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.32.2023.03.048-062 Laser weapons have long been the subject of debate. The article discusses the potential adoption of laser weapons by infantry units and the future of small firearms. The text analyses these weapons in selected categories that subsequently support the evaluations and the conclusion. If miniaturisation is successfully managed, the comparison reveals an interesting paradox. While laser weapons and firearms do not rival each other as distinct functionalities, given the right conditions, they can actually complement each other and compensate for any disadvantages within their respective categories. Today's complex battlefield is placing ever greater demands on small arms, pushing conventional weapon mechanisms - combined with ammunition that guarantees accuracy and lower recoil, albeit at the expense of penetration - towards the limits of further possible advancement in technology. Improved passive individual protection restricts the wounding potential of pistol ammunition, reducing it to below 150 m for rifle cartridges, while guided ammunition tends to be prohibitively expensive. Under the right conditions, laser weapons could compensate for any of these drawbacks. |
Weapon System Acquisition Process Utilizing Design Simulation as Decision SupportReviewedJan Drozd, Josef ProcházkaVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2024, Vol. XXXIII. (LXV.): 37-50 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.33.2024.04.037-050 The selection of optimal weapon systems is crucial for national defense. Traditional empirical methods struggle to address the complexities of modern warfare. This article explores the potential of constructive simulation for informed decision-making in this domain. Simulating tactical operations with complex variables, such as terrain, enemy actions, and system interoperability, provides valuable insights into weapon effectiveness. This enables the optimization of acquisitions in line with strategic goals. Design simulation allows for the exploration of factors difficult to test comparison of armament configurations, analysis of enemy tactics, and optimization of unit composition and deployment, saving costs and time. Simulation enables the safe exploration of even high-risk scenarios. |
Civil War in Myanmar. Causes, Actors, DevelopmentReviewedMiroslav NožinaVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2024, Vol. XXXIII. (LXV.): 91-104 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.33.2024.04.091-104 The civil war in Myanmar has been going on for more than seven decades. After the military coup in February 2021, it has undergone significant structural changes and gained new momentum. The causes of the conflict lie in the inability of different ethnic and political groups to find a way to coexist within a single state entity and the autonomisation of the military. The main actors in the war in Myanmar today are the military junta and its supporters, the democratic opposition and ethnic organisations. After the coup, the strength of the resistance movement and its operational capabilities are growing. However, this growth has its limits, given the continued disunity of opposition forces, the technical superiority of the Myanmar army and the strengthening of its numbers through compulsory conscription. |

Possibilities of Developing Medical Support Capabilities in the Area of Chemical, Biological Radiological and Nuclear DefenceReviewed - ReviewAleš Tichý, Richard SaibertVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 1/2023, Vol. XXXII. (LXIV.): 98-117 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.32.2023.01.098-117 The article deals with the evaluation of current possibilities of medical support capabilities in the area of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence. The evaluation of national strategic documents shows that the area of providing care in the event of chemical and biological hazards is significantly more developed than in the area of radiation, while the security threats associated with radiation are constantly growing. Analysis of NATO standardization documents in the field of medical support and relevant Czech doctrinal documents was carried out, based on which the diagnostics and triage of irradiated persons, called biological dosimetry, was identified as a potential capability. Using the capability planning methodology and based on the evaluation of the functional areas, a conceptual approach to the development of biological dosimetry capabilities was defined. The presented recommendations also include a proposal for the organizational structure of the Czech Armed Forces biodosimetric network. |
The C5ISR System Integrated with Unmanned Aircraft in the Large-Scale Combat OperationsReviewed - ReviewMarko Radovanović, Aleksandar Petrovski, Vinko ŽnidaršičVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 2/2023, Vol. XXXII. (LXIV.): 98-118 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.32.2023.02.098-118 The manner of conducting modern large-scale combat operations (LSCOs) is characterized by the increasingly frequent and diverse use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) integrated into the Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4IRS) system. These aircraft are one of the most important types of weapons in modern LSCOs. Anyone that has the technology can process the latest information from the field and safely passes that information to the command center has a great advantage and a chance to cause great damage to units whose goal is to prevent further operational work. What is important is that UAVs must have some degree of self-protection through site selection action to reconnaissance and retreat routes. The paper presents the possibility of using UAVs for various missions in LSCOs, as well as a case study of their use in previous modern armed conflicts. |
Current Nuclear Strategies and Arsenals of the United States of America and the Russian FederationReviewed - ReviewAdam PotočňákVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2021, Vol. XXX. (LXII.): 23-44 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.30.2021.04.023-044 The article holistically analyses current strategies for the use and development of nuclear forces of the USA and Russia and analytically reflects their mutual doctrinal interactions. It deals with the conditions under which the U.S. and Russia may opt for using their nuclear weapons and reflects also related issues of modernization and development of their actual nuclear forces. The author argues that both superpowers did not manage to abandon the Cold War logic or avoid erroneous, distorted or exaggerated assumptions about the intentions of the other side. The text concludes with a summary of possible changes and adaptations of the American nuclear strategy under the Biden administration as part of the assumed strategy update expected for 2022. |
Ten Years after Signing the Chemical Weapons Convention: How to Proceed in Chemical Disarmament?Informational pagesIng. Ladislav Středa, CSc.Vojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 3/2007, Vol. XVI. (XLVIII.): 86-96 The basic pillar of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction is the obligation of the States Parties of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to eliminate chemical weapons and facilities for their production within the year of 2007. The 11th Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons took place in the Hague (5-8 December 2006). The Conference evaluated the present course of the destruction of chemical weapons and approved requests for extensions of the final date for the destruction of the declared chemical weapons stockpiles for all State Parties-owners of chemical weapons. It remains questionable whether such extension accomplishes the original goal of the Convention - to eliminate the chemical weapons around the globe. |

It focuses on the most significant historical events and explains the ways of functioning and the consequences of the processes that have been taking place there for a long time. |
Yomkippur War from the Perspective of Czechoslovak DiplomacyReviewed - ReviewEva TaterováVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2023, Vol. XXXII. (LXIV.): 3-23 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.32.2023.04.003-023 This study presents the perspective of Czechoslovak diplomacy on the events of the Yom Kippur War (1973) in the context Czechoslovak foreign policy towards the Arab-Israeli conflict in early 1970s. The research is based on so far rather underexplored archival sources. Despite Czechoslovakia's declared unequivocal support for the Arab side of the conflict, Czechoslovak Middle Eastern policy since the mid-1950s was not entirely unconditional in relation to the Arab countries. Internal documents of Czechoslovak government occasionally revealed criticisms of Arab representatives. The Yom Kippur War represented a significant moment in this regard, as it was a military confrontation initiated not by Israel but by the Arab coalition, posing a challenge for Czechoslovak propaganda. Simultaneously, this armed conflict presented an opportunity for Communist Czechoslovakia to further deepen its relations with its Arab allies. |
Update on the United States Nuclear Strategy: from NPR 2018 to NPR 2022Reviewed - ResearchAdam PotočňákVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 2/2023, Vol. XXXII. (LXIV.): 3-22 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.32.2023.02.003-022 The article follows the author's comparative analysis of American and Russian nuclear doctrines and armaments from the fall of 2021. It presents the current nuclear strategy of the United States of America based on a content analysis of three specific areas of the updated version of the Nuclear Posture Review. Applying interpretive analysis and a rich secondary sources apparatus, the author also reflects on his 2021-formulated assumptions and expectations about the further development of American nuclear strategy under President Joe Biden. The author analyzes the influence of the presidential administration's ideological and political ambitions together with the decisive geopolitical events of 2022 and concludes that mainly due to the second factor, the current shape of American nuclear strategy has not undergone any revolutionary changes and continues to maintain a long-standing continuity and consensus about its basic principles. |
National Defense and Environmental Protection: On the Czech Armed Forces´ Approach to the Development of Environmental Legislation in the Czech, EU and NATO ContextReviewed - ReviewNatálie Horáková, Pavel Maňas, Ota Rolenec, Tibor PalasiewiczVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2022, Vol. XXXI. (LXIII.): 172-202 | DOI: 10.3849/2336-2995.31.2022.04.172-202 The aim of this study was to create an overview of the Czech Armed Forces' development in approach to environmental protection from 1989 to 2022. Using the methods of analysis, synthesis and comparison of the Czech, EU´s and NATO´s environmental legislation, we created a comprehensive and previously unpublished overview of environmental protection within the Czech Armed Forces. Found outputs were set into illustrations depicting the activities in the environmental field with internal links between civil legislation, EU's requirements, and NATO's policy in chronological order. We conclude that the year 2000 represents a key milestone from which the approach to environmental protection have stagnated. Among the reasons for the stagnation, we identify commanders' concerns about "green approach" to troop training and the lack environmental education within defence department. |
One Hundred Years have Passed since the Founding of Vojenské Rozhledy JournalReviewed - ReviewVladimír KaraffaVojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. MC/2020, Vol. XXIX. The Last Generation of Chemical WeaponsMilitary professionalProf. Ing. Emil Halámek, CSc., prof. Ing. Zbyněk Kobliha, CSc.Vojenské rozhledy / Czech Military Review Nr. 4/2008, Vol. XVII. (XLIX.): 137-146 At the beginning, the authors introduce modern history of chemical weapons, starting with the deployment of chlorine on April 22, 1915. In the early 70s, the US opened the project BLWS (Binary Lethal Weapons Systems) with the aim to replace old chemical arsenal and eliminate risks tied with the storage of chemical weapons, so did the Russians. Today, new generation of chemical weapons come into being, with higher toxicity, prepared by very simple procedures and means, very heavily degraded. We are proud that the Army of the Czech Republic belongs to those few armies oriented to building chemical-warfare units, specialized and trained to detect the presence of chemical weapons and to decontaminate persons, equipment and vehicles which have been affected by weapons of mass destruction (NBC). |
